No matter what animal you are talking about, all of them have some pattern related to reproduction. Even human beings, who have babies throughout the year, still have a pattern of reproduction, fertilization, and birth. It’s just how nature works.
While human beings can have babies throughout the year, there are many species of animals that only have babies, pups, kittens, litters, or other types of young during the summer. This period of time is referred to as the Summer maternity season.
Described in More Depth
The season sounds very much like it is being described. The name pretty much gives this away.
During the springtime, there are several species of animals that begin the mating process. This includes the courtship and copulation period. This means that within a few months period of time the animal will give birth to its young. This occurs during the summer, making it part of the Summer maternity season for these animals.
Bats Follow This Pattern
The bat is one such animal that follows the Summer maternity season. It is not the only one, however. Squirrels, rabbits, and raccoons also frequently made during the spring and have their babies during the summer. Most often, the babies are born in June and July, giving them plenty of time to acclimate themselves before the fall begins.
While bats have their babies during the summer maternity season, many species of bats do not have their offspring until late into August or early in September. Many bats also hibernate, meaning that there is just a short period of time between the birth and the time when hibernation begins where this animal learns to fend for itself.
Fortunately for the bat, they reach a high degree of maturity very early on. Within a few weeks after it is born, the bat is usually able to hunt on its own. It can find food, capture, and kill it.
Because bats usually live in large colonies, they are able to protect one another from potential predators. This helps the young bats to be able to have a greater chance of thriving because there is a large colony to help protect them. In addition, bats are usually born as twins or triplets, so large numbers of new babies are born right around the same time frame.
The Odd Balls
There are even some species of bats that have a dual summer maternity season. These bats can have babies very early in the summer, right around the end of June, then have another set of twins or triplets right around the middle of September. Because the mother hibernates much of the winter, she is either pregnant or hibernating much of the year. Not very much of an exciting lifestyle if you get down to it.
Because of the mating habits and summer maternity seasons, people who live in areas where bats are known to thrive should be aware that they are going to see large numbers of these animals as the summer winds down. This is the time to ensure that you have done a thorough inspection of the exterior of your home to ensure these animals are not trying to get into your attic or business.
